The Phuket Project

We need people who care. It's really that simple. People who know that the recovery and rebuilding effort will last longer than the attention of the media and who want to make a difference.

Although our goal is to find people willing to travel to Phuket in the late spring and summer, we also need people who can help coordinate the program locally. We need people with experience in fundraising, media relations, corporate outreach, and marketing. We want people who believe anything is possible and are willing to donate their time and energy toward helping the victims of the tsunami.

Our commitment to helping the people of Phuket means that we operate with minimal overhead and volunteer our time, energy, and efforts in support of these volunteer initiatives. We continue to solicit corporate sponsorship and support, but volunteers should be prepared to potentially cover the cost of airfare to Bangok and accommodations for two weeks in Phuket. Although we hope to secure discounted airfare and accommodations, volunteers are also encouraged to fundraise in their local communities and encourage support from friends, family, and co-workers.

Be creative. Do something that is consistent with who you are, and the sorts of communities you support. Someone had a bake sale in Kansas City; someone else is selling greeting cards in Massachusetts. There are many ways you can help raise monies for The Phuket Project and tsunami relief. Some additional ideas are here, and information you can use in conversations with potential donors is available here.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Rubber, meet road. There are now two trips scheduled for Thailand in the fall.
The following dates represent dates we will need to be in Phuket. Please take into consideration travel to and from the United States and from Bangkok into Phuket when you are looking at your calendars. The flight is approximately 24 hours, in transit, to Bangkok.

FIFTH TRIP - SEPT 18 TO OCT 3
We are happy to report that group five is almost full and Mui has just returned from scouting two new projects for September and October. We will likely work on two sites upon our return - a construction project at Baan Tap Tawaan and a huge mural project at a local school in Baan Nam Khem (where we also had projects for groups two and three). So far, the fifth group has fifteen volunteers and is due to arrive in Phuket on September 18th. The trip will be led by Curt Kluth from trip one, James Quilty from groups three and four and the ever-eager superhero Mui Kabkrue. If you are interested in taking the last few spots, please email us.

SIXTH TRIP- OCT 3 TO OCT 15
Since we did a pretty good job of quickly filling group five, we are very close to saying GO to a sixth group. If you are interested in traveling to Thailand in October, you will need to arrive in Bangkok by Saturday October 1. The sixth team will work from Monday October 3 through Saturday October 15. At this point, we will take up to 20 volunteers for this sixth group and if you are interested please contact us as soon as possible. If we get an equally strong response from potential volunteers, we will quickly confirm the details of the trip.

If you think you might be interested in participating with these teams of volunteers, please make sure your volunteer information sheet has been filled out.

You should also make sure your passport is up to date and get any vaccinations you may need. You can check out the center for disease control site at http://www.bt.cdc.gov/disasters/tsunamis/ for more information on preparing for your trip.
